In the 1970s, in the boldest houses, the living room sank into the floor and became a conversation pit: a large padded nest where people gathered. Hannes Peer, an architect and designer from South Tyrol based in Milan, started from that idea for Baxter's Aura family. In his own words, Aura echoes the splendour of John Lautner's Los Angeles mansions, from the Sheats-Goldstein Residence to the Garcia House.
A bed that floats
The Aura bed rests on an aluminium frame, polished chrome or lacquered, that lifts away from the floor and gives the feeling of a suspended volume. Above it, sculpted padding covered in full-grain leather, the finest grade, which keeps its natural grain. It is a bed you look at as a piece of design, not just a place to sleep.
Two headboards to live in
The headboard is made of two padded, shaped elements designed to support your back while you read or watch a film. This is the detail that brings the spirit of the conversation pit into the bedroom: the bed becomes a place to stay in during the day too.
Sizes and companions
Aura is made for 160, 180 and 200 cm mattresses and in Queen, California King and King sizes for homes in the United States and elsewhere. It pairs with the low, matching Aura bedside table and coffee table. For an even leaner look there is Aura Slim, with a folded aluminium base.
Our advice
Aura is at its best in bright bedrooms with light walls and little around it, where the metal base can reflect the light.
